25 Years - New Logo - Same Mission

Judy Mackeigan took to the podium Wednesday to talk about our Cleveland Metroparks.

Judy is the Historian and Archivist for the Cleveland Metroparks.  Judy joined the Metroparks in 2010, and one of her roles is to share the history of the Metroparks to visitors and community groups.

Judy focused on the history of summer camps throughout the years, and fascinated the club with pictures dating back to the 1930s and 1940s showing life as a camper.  Many members in attendance recounted their own experiences of summer camps.

Judy walked through all of the reservations, ending with a brief history of Strongsville's own Camp Cheerful.

If you want more information about the Cleveland Metroparks, you can visit them here.

A regular Wednesday meeting became a very special time as members of the Strongsville Kiwanis Club visited Camp Cheerful, located in the Mill Stream Run Reservation in Strongsville.

The meeting started with a visit to the equine center, where members learned about all the great programs Camp Cheerful offers and how their Equine Therapy program improves lives.

After a chance to 'meet' some of the horses, the club got a full tour of the grounds.  Members concluded the evening learning about volunteer opportunities and fundraising efforts to keep the camp running.

2020 will be a special year for Strongsville Kiwanis as it marks 25 years of service to our community.

Planning is underway for a celebration that will include a big "Thank you!" to all the people and clubs who helped the club get started, as well as all those who have made the club what it is today.

Memories of Cleveland Metroparks

We are starting a new feature this month.  While we certainly hope to see as many members and friends at meetings as possible, we know that not everybody can be at each meeting.  We will feature brief articles and photos from recent meetings here at The Strongsville Kiwanis Corner.  If you have any ideas for speakers or activities for future meetings, please let us know!

Strongsville Kiwanis Visits Camp Cheerful

The Kiwanis Club of Strongsville welcomed Joe Gazzo to the podium Wednesday night.  Joe is the Director of Education for the Baseball Heritage Museum at League Park.

Joe entertained the club with stories of the history of the park that included a slide show of pictures from the museum.  Club members, who welcomed Joe by wearing a variety of Indians hats, shirts, and jackets, were fascinated as they heard about the early days of the Cleveland Indians.

Joe, an incredible artist as well as a gifted speaker, showed the club a number of his drawings including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and "The Yankee Clipper" Joe DiMaggio.
